The white arrow on the HSI is the desired track angle (DTA) pointer and displays the desired track angle along waypoints in a route (it only points at a waypoint when you are on the track and the steerpoint is also the waypoint.) I say steerpoint and waypoint since they are different. The angle is defined as the course from the previous waypoint to the current one. Since there is no waypoint previous to waypoint 1 the track angle for that leg is not defined and the DTA needle assumes a default position when waypoint 1 is selected.
